Researching auto transport companies

When hiring an auto transporter there are some basics that should be covered before giving them a deposit to ship you car or motorcycle. Start by checking with the U.S. government to make sure the have the proper operating authority. (follow continue on the FMCSA page and then use the top left drop menu to do a carrier search, using the company name, state and MC#.)

All auto transporters will need a valid MC number and USDOT if they are a carrier. Make sure their status is active and their bond if they are a transport broker and insurance if they are a carrier is valid.

Next you want to make sure the auto shipping company does not have a history of complaints on the BBB. Note, that companies may have some complaints over their long history which is natural in this business due to issues sometimes out of their control like transport delivery time complaints, which can be caused by weather or traffic. What you want to look for is a pattern of the same complaints that are not responded to. Stay away if that's the case and find another auto transporter to ship your car.
